Its design draws inspiration from Europe's grand concert halls of the 19th century, featuring a "shoebox" layout that enhances acoustical excellence. The main venue, the 1,844-seat Laura Turner Concert Hall, is notable for its natural lighting, provided by 30 soundproof windows, and houses a custom-built organ with 47 voices and 3,568 pipes.

The center hosts a diverse array of musical events, including classical, pops, jazz, and world music performances. Its innovative convertible seating system allows the orchestra level to transform into a 5,700-square-foot ballroom, accommodating various event formats. Additionally, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center offers spaces like the Mike Curb Family Music Education Hall and the Martha Rivers Ingram Garden Courtyard, supporting educational initiatives and community engagement.

Throughout its history, the center has faced challenges, such as significant flood damage in 2010, which led to extensive repairs and restoration. Despite these obstacles, it has maintained its status as a premier venue for musical excellence. The Nashville Symphony, under the leadership of Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero, continues to inspire and entertain audiences, contributing to Nashville's rich cultural landscape.
