The Catacombs of San Callisto are one of the most historically significant early Christian burial sites in Rome. They once served as the official cemetery of the Church of Rome and are the resting place of 16 popes, numerous martyrs, and thousands of early Christians.

Highlights of the site include the Crypt of the Popes, often referred to as the "Little Vatican," and the Crypt of Saint Cecilia, which features early Christian frescoes. The catacombs are accessible only through guided tours, which typically last around 40 minutes and are offered in several languages. Visitors will find the tour informative and respectful of the sacred and historical nature of the site.

The catacombs are open from Thursday to Tuesday, with hours from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. They are closed on Wednesdays and major holidays. Photography is not allowed inside, and due to the underground setting, visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be mindful of the cool temperatures and narrow passages. Access involves stairs and uneven surfaces, making it unsuitable for those with mobility challenges.
