The zoo is home to around 900 species of animals, presented in naturalistic enclosures designed to promote conservation and education. Key attractions include the Savannah habitat, Butterfly Pavilion, Lemur Land, and an innovative microbiology museum called Micropia. Visitors can also explore a planetarium and the Groote Museum, which offers a deeper look into the relationship between humans and the natural world.

Artis is open daily throughout the year, generally from 9:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening during the warmer months, and closing one hour earlier during the winter season. A typical visit lasts three to four hours, though many stay longer to enjoy all areas. The facility is wheelchair accessible, with a limited number of wheelchairs available for guests, and offers a mix of educational programs, animal talks, and family-friendly activities.
