The present basilica, begun in 1506 and completed in 1626, was designed by several renowned architects including Bramante, Michelangelo, Maderno, and Bernini.

The basilica houses significant works of art, including Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s elaborate Baldachin above the papal altar. Its massive dome, designed by Michelangelo, rises over 130 meters and offers panoramic views of Rome to those who climb the 491 steps or take the elevator partway. Beneath the basilica are the Vatican Grottoes, which contain the tombs of many popes and notable historical figures, adding to the site's spiritual and historical significance.

St. Peter’s Basilica is open daily, with hours varying slightly depending on the season. Entry to the main basilica is free, but tickets are required for visiting the dome and the grottoes. Modest dress is required—shoulders and knees must be covered—and photography is permitted in most areas. Due to the basilica’s popularity, early morning visits are recommended to avoid long lines and to experience the site with fewer crowds.
